A brand new one — finished about 30 minutes ago.
I’m not sure about the title of the piece. When saving a new project, you have to pick a name, and this was my spur-of-the-moment choice, but I may change it. I have COVID right now, so my brain is very cloudy,1 but I think it’s either about feeling freed from one’s expectations — especially when it comes to things like a good mixdown — or about feeling free to explore musical forms, to try and make something that sounds more like the ‘thing itself.’
Sometimes, I get a little frustrated with music because most of it just sounds like other music. I don’t mean in an anxiety of influence way where acts sound a bit like their heroes, I mean more like the music doesn’t always sound like the world or the feeling itself. One picks up a guitar and does guitary things. What about picking up a guitar and unleashing existential terror directly into the souls of your listeners? That’s what I mean by the ‘thing itself.’ It’s probably an impossible desire. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
But I change my mind about this stuff all the time. And anyway, we’ll be back to folk songs that sound like other folk songs soon enough. ;-)
Right now, this tune isn’t part of a larger project, but I have an idea for a companion piece so maybe it’ll get a sibling sooner rather than later.
Have a great weekend!
