More Joy, but dance.
December is mid-century pop season. I’m not talking about Nat King Cole singing Christmas songs (definitely not that), but him singing Autumn Leaves and Unforgettable, etc. Songs for sitting inside while it snows outside.
But before the season of Ella and Billie and Nat and Frank gets into full…swing…comes the year’s most purple month.
This November, I mostly listened to Don Williams, with a smattering of Kryptic Minds’ impeccably produced dubstep, a dalliance with Henrik Schwarz’s omnivorous house grooves, a ‘lil Madagacan guitar, and the usual smattering of township jive.
Good Ole Boys Like Me seems like one of those perfect songs, and Don’s version of Time is one of the best-sounding tracks I’ve heard. At some point, I’m going to write about how ‘70s country is some of the nicest-sounding music out there. Warm and pillowy but still present and dynamic. Even diligent students of the sound like Dave Cobb seem unable to quite capture it. Perhaps we just don’t know how anymore.1
Personally, I think the quintessential sonics of the ‘80s were a big mistake.
